Cholesterol
HDL vs. LDL and their functions
HDL: high density lipoprotein, known as 'good' cholesterol,
carries cholesterol and triglyceride from food OUT of the
bloodstream into the liver, and removes cholesterol from
body cells.
LDL: low density lipoprotein, known as 'bad' cholesterol
carrier, carries cholesterol and triglyceride from food in the
bloodstream to cells.
What raises and lowers HDL and LDL
Lipids and CVD reduces LDL.
Consuming trans fats increases the risk for heart disease by
lowering HDL cholesterol.
Desirable/undesirable blood cholesterol values
Desirable LDL Cholesterol: < 100mg/dL
Desirable HDL Cholesterol: >40 mg/dL for men, >50
mg/dL for women
Amino Acids
Supplement regulation and safety
No level of amino acid supplements can be considered safe.
, Essential amino acids vs non-essential amino acids (how
many)
Essential amino acids (9): cannot be produced by our
bodies, must be obtained from food.
Nonessential amino acids (11): can be produced by our
bodies.
Supplements and muscle building
Amino acids are dietary supplements and are not regulated.
Protein
Groups that need more protein
Infants/children, teens, pregnant/lactating women, athletes,
and individuals 65 years or older.
Primary function of protein
Protein is composed of large, complex molecules made up
of amino acids.
DRI for healthy adults
0.8 grams of protein per kg body weight per day
Kg= body weight/ 2.2
Complete proteins
Considered 'high quality' proteins as they contain all 9
essential amino acids, often found in animal sources.
