As you mentioned, Metabolic Alkalosis occurs when there is an over production of bicarbonate. It occurs due to the loss of hydrogen from the body or gain in HCO3- (Thomas & Batuman, November 01, 2018). As a compensatory mechanism, it leads to hypoventilation due to an increase of carbon dioxide. During the diagnosis process of the patient, the doctor observes and evaluates the patient’s bicarbonate concentration serum levels. Once it is determine that the bicarbonate level is greater than 35 mEq/L , the doctor confirms the diagnosis for Metabolic alkalosis (Thomas & Batuman, November 01, 2018). Once the doctor determines that he is unable to confirm the diagnosis thru clinical/physical examination, they further evaluate the patients electrolyte serum and arterial blood gas levels (Thomas & Batuman, November 01, 2018). . This confirms the providers diagnosis for the patient. Treatment for Metabolic alkalosis includes carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, hydrochloric acid, potassium sparing diuretics, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, potassium supplements, fluid replacement, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (Thomas & Batuman, November 01, 2018). In some cases, providers will consult nephrologist to assist with the patients care. Due to some cases requiring dialysis to kidney failure.
