This bibliography addresses the general topic of the impact of digital technology on education.
The research question developed under this topic is ‘Millennials as Digital Natives. Is
reformation of education structure necessary to address the learning needs of digital natives?’.
The debate exists around the idea that the generation of students born after 1980, termed as
‘digital natives ’, possess fluent technological skills and that the education system must reform
to accommodate their needs and interests (Prensky, 2001). Researchers in the fields of
education and technology are interested in exploring the adoption of digital technology as well
as its impact on the learning preferences of younger students. Therefore, this research is
focused on the specific question regarding the existence of ‘digital natives’ and whether there is
an urgent necessity for a radical transformation in the education system and to what extent
should the changes be made to address the preferences of ‘digital natives’.
This research was guided by the following questions:
1. Is there a digital divide between ‘Digital Natives’ and ‘Digital Immigrants’?
2. Do all born after 1980 possess fluent technological skills? Are all millennials ‘digital
natives’?
3. Do ‘digital natives’ have unique learning preferences that involve wide use of
technology? Is there a debate about it?
4. Has digital technology influenced the needs and interest of ‘digital natives’ exclusively
and to what extent?
5. Do all ‘digital natives’ feel detached from the traditional education system? Is there
a debate about it?
