,Why is it tough to have First Nation primary sources? - correct answer
✔Because the culture of the First Nations was passed on through oral
tradition, it was often not written down by First Nations people themselves.
The accounts that then made their way down through history were often
accounts written by missionaries and explorers who sometimes
misunderstood First Nations culture and misrepresented them in their
histories. Also at times, illustrations or iconography created by missionaries
and explorers were not based on reality and led to a misunderstanding of
native culture in Europe and among European settlers.

Land Acknowledgement Campaign - correct answer ✔A Land
Acknowledgement is a formal statement that recognizes the unique and
enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their
traditional territories.

Why do we recognize the land?

To recognize the land is an expression of gratitude and appreciation to those
whose territory you reside on, and a way of honouring the Aboriginal people
who have been living and working on the land from time immemorial. It is
important to understand the long standing history that has brought you to
reside on the land, and to seek to understand your place within that history.
Land acknowledgements do not exist in a past tense, or historical context:
colonialism is a current ongoing process, and we need to build our
mindfulness of our present participation. It is also worth noting that
acknowledging the land is Indigenous protocol.

Whaling and Fishing on Canada's East Coast - correct answer ✔Records
indicate that Jacques Cartier encountered Basque whalers on his first
expedition to North America in 1534. Mainly in the strait of Belle-Isle, between
Newfoundland and Quebec and Labrador, these whalers, who are believed to
have numbered 2000 at their peak, were employed seasonally from June until
January, supplying Europe with prized whale meat (also known as lenten
bacon or fast fish) and blubber used for oil lamps and as an ingredient in other
products. Basque shore stations were set up along the coast of Labrador
where trading took place. Historians believe that a trade language developed
as a result of this contact. In this case it was believed to be a mixture of
Basque and Algonquian.

A great demand for cod, known as the beef of the sea, resulted in significant
development of the fishery in what is now Atlantic Canada. Initially, the French
and Portuguese were heavily involved in seasonal fishing while the English
were restricted by their limited supply of "solar salt. " Those who produced salt
cod (morue verte or the green fishery) gutted and salted their fish onboard,
needing large quantities of salt to preserve fish for the return journey. By the
late 1500s, England was much more aggressive in the fishing industry,
employing the dry fishing (morue seche) method whereby cod was dried and
only lightly salted before it was brought back to Europe. This resulted in
fishing closer to the shore, and the establishment of small coastal fishing
structures such as sheds and drying racks knows as "flakes." Although the
fishery was estimated to have employed as many as 10 000 men annually,
the labour, supplies, capital and markets they supplied, were largely
European.
