D295 WGU Task 2 - Identifying Coins: Quarter & Nickel Lesson Plan
D295 Task 2
A. Identify the following from a unit of study:
Topic of the lesson: Identify the name and value of a quarter and a nickel
Essential Concept: Students will be able to label the name and value of both a quarter
and a nickel. They will learn about the different features each coin has to help them
decipher which coin is which. Students will use prior knowledge of identifying pennies
and dimes to eliminate choices.
B. Explain how the essential concept, skill, or task from part A will be demonstrated
in your e-learning activity by doing the following:
B1. Identify the strategy
The strategies that will be used throughout the lesson are direct instruction and gradual
release (I do, you do, we do).
B1a. Explain how you will use the strategy from part B1 to demonstrate the
concept, skill, or task from part A
This is a new concept for students, so it will need to be taught explicitly through direct
instruction. I will go over each coin and show students a picture of each coin. I will tell
students what Presidents are on the coin, what significant symbol is on the back of the
coin, and will talk about the size of the coin and compare it with other coins to help give
students a good visual. Then I will teach students the specific coins song. This will be the
I do portion of the lesson. Then, together, I will show different coins to see if students are
able to identify the coin with the support and guidance from me. This will allow me to
observe the students who are understanding and those who are not to give extra support
to. Students will then be sent on their own to watch the YouTube video to reiterate what
was taught during direct instruction. Students will then play a review game where they

have to identify the quarter or the nickel. I will be able to track their progress and see if
they need support or not through the report from the game. Then students will complete a
quick exit ticket, which will also show me if they understand the material.
Note** I will be introducing the nickel and how to identify it on day 1. Day 2,
students will identify its value. On Day 3, students will identify the quarter. On Day 4,
students will identify the quarter's value. Then day 5 will be a review of the previous 4
days.
B2. Explain how you will use digital tools to demonstrate the essential concept,
skill, or task from part A in an online or hybrid learning environment.
The digital tools that will be used are:
-Zoom for direct instruction/small group instruction
- YouTube for a video to review content learned in whole group instruction
- Education.com for review games
-Google Classroom and Google Forms- for students to use to complete an exit
ticket to check for understanding after each day.
B3. Explain how the strategy described in part B1 will allow learners to practice and
receive feedback as they learn the essential concept, skill, or task.
Students will be able to practice and receive feedback during direct instruction (I do and
We do). I will be able to observe which students are understanding the material and
which are not, and give support to those who are not during direct instruction. Students
will practice implementing the skill as well during the gradual release we do stage. This
will give students some practice, but also allow them a safety net in case they do not
understand. I can step in and offer more support for deeper understanding. I will show
students during the we do portion how to access the game from Google Classroom and
