1.1 Five key challenges faced by learners in South Africa that contribute
to school dropout
1.Poverty and hunger
Most of the learners report school having not eaten a decent meal. In the
article, 13 percent of the children are always hungry. This can be the only
meal that they get and this may not sustain the learning process at all times
and this is through the school feeding scheme. The feeling of hunger can
, impair the concentration of an individual and his/her energy level which
ultimately results in poor academic performance and dropout.
2.Harmful and Challenging Traveling
The students have to walk a long way (in some cases greater than 10 km),
take several untaxi and unsecured cabs or buses. Even in other places such
as the Cape Flats, children have to pass by even unsafe places because of
gang violence. These unsound conditions do not encourage attendance.
3.Congested classrooms and bad infrastructure
In classrooms there are learners up to 60, there are few resources, there were
no any materials about learning on the walls, and the physical conditions were
not good. This interferes with learning process and exposes teachers to
difficulties to provide personal attention to learners and these demotivate
learners.
4.Violence and bullying
Results of a study quoted in the article showed that 48 percent of Grade 5
learners in no-fee schools were being bullied once a week. Also, girls (and
learners in general) are sexually harassed in school and on their way to
school. Violence in a school makes learners afraid and anxious to move out of
the system.
5.Home Unsupportiveness
They leave their kids to a lonely house and expect them to shoulder duties or
others. There is also no academic support and in many instances, there exists
domestic violence making studying and doing of homework a low priority
hence poor academic performance.
1.2 Five strategies schools can implement to support learners and
reduce dropout rates
1.Enhance School Feeding Scheme
Schools are also in a position to provide nutritious meals to the learners on a
daily basis. This curbs hunger, enhances energy, and gives learners a better
concentration in the class and therefore the likelihood to stay in school
increases.
