Total = 21
Equation: 2x + 3 = 21 Subtract 3: 2x = 18 Divide by 2: x = 9
Answer: John originally had 9 marbles.
To teach: Use bar models and visual aids to help learners understand the steps and
logic.

1.2.1 Early Evidence
Early humans used tally marks on bones to count.
Example: Lebombo bone with 29 notches.
Example: Stones to count livestock.
