Sociological Theory: Exploring the Impact of Diffusion Theory on Current Divorce Rates

Document preview thumbnail

Sociological Theory Explaining Current Divorce Rates In recent years, divorce rates have been seen to increase dramatically. The issue has been linked with many factors. Some of them are marrying young, low income, limited education, premarital pregnancy, insecurity, no religious affiliation, change in behaviour, etc. (Hald et al., 2019, 90). Commitment has been demonstrated to be a significant element in why some couples remain together. Divorce calls for attention to society since it has been seen to be one of the main causes of psychological, economic, and social destruction on family members. The rise in divorce has transformed marriage from a long-term partnership to a potentially dissolving relationship. Several sociological theories tried to explain the emergence of this behavioural change. These theories often attribute their origin to ideational, economic, and social change (Perelli-Harris et al., 2017, 303). One of these theories is the diffusion theory. Diffusion theory has explained divorce as a change in behaviour brought about by social dynamics, behavioural innovation, and ideational change. Therefore, this paper points out how current divorce rates can be explained by diffusion theory.

Sociological Theory Explaining Current Divorce Rates

In recent years, divorce rates have been seen to increase dramatically. The issue has been

linked with many factors. Some of them are marrying young, low income, limited education,

premarital pregnancy, insecurity, no religious affiliation, change in behaviour, etc. (Hald et al.,

2019, 90). Commitment has been demonstrated to be a significant element in why some couples

remain together. Divorce calls for attention to society since it has been seen to be one of the main

causes of psychological, economic, and social destruction on family members. The rise in

divorce has transformed marriage from a long-term partnership to a potentially dissolving

relationship. Several sociological theories tried to explain the emergence of this behavioural

change. These theories often attribute their origin to ideational, economic, and social change

(Perelli-Harris et al., 2017, 303). One of these theories is the diffusion theory. Diffusion theory

has explained divorce as a change in behaviour brought about by social dynamics, behavioural

innovation, and ideational change. Therefore, this paper points out how current divorce rates can

be explained by diffusion theory.
