Kaiser:
- Abdicated on 9th Nov 1918
Armistice:
- Signed 11th Nov 1918 by Erzburger
- Pressured to sign → people struggling + didn’t know if they could continue or
not
- Some saw signing as betrayal → believed Germany could continue
Temporary Government:
- Made of SPD + USPD until elections → January 1919
Weimar Republic:
- Friedrich Ebert - President
- Phillip Schleideman - Chancellor
- Wrote new constitution
- Bill of rights for citizens
- Everyone 20+ can vote
- Elected President + Reichstag (parliament)
- President: elected every 7 yrs + can rule by decree (Article 48) + is head of army & picks
chancellor
- Chancellor: chosen by president, responsible for everyday running + ½ reichstag has to
agree to made a new law
- Reichstag: most powerful, members elected every 4 years w/ Proportional
Representation
- Reichsrat: less powerful + has members from local regions + can delay laws
Weaknesses:
- Proportional Representation → so many parties & disagreements + many coalitions
- President could misuse Article 48
Treaty of Versailles:
- Signed by Ebert, 28 June 1919 → WP disliked by Germans
- Terms decided by Allies
- Was a ‘diktat’
