1.1 Definition of the ‘additive language approach
The additive language approach means that children first build a strong foundation in their
home language, and then a new language (called the first additional language) is added
without replacing the home language. The two languages support each other, and learners
use their knowledge of the first language to help them understand and learn the new one
(CHL2601, Learning Unit 5, p. 403).
