Physics - Magnetic Effects of Current Notes
1. Magnetic Effect of Electric Current
When an electric current passes through a conductor, it produces a magnetic field around it. This is known as
the magnetic effect of current and was first discovered by Hans Christian rsted.
2. Magnetic Field
A magnetic field is the region around a magnetic material or a moving electric charge within which the force
of magnetism acts.
- Represented by field lines from North to South outside the magnet
- Strength is indicated by closeness of the lines
3. Right Hand Thumb Rule
If you hold a straight conductor in your right hand such that the thumb points in the direction of current, then
the fingers wrap around in the direction of magnetic field lines.
4. Magnetic Field Due to a Current-Carrying Coil
- A circular loop carrying current generates a magnetic field at the center similar to a bar magnet.
- Increasing number of turns increases field strength.
5. Electromagnet
A soft iron core placed inside a current-carrying coil becomes a magnet. It is called an electromagnet.
- Used in electric bells, relays, motors
6. Force on a Current-Carrying Conductor in a Magnetic Field
A current-carrying conductor experiences a force when placed in a magnetic field.
- Direction given by Flemings Left Hand Rule
7. Applications
- Electric motors
- Electromagnetic cranes
- Maglev trains
- Loudspeakers
