A. After the Civil War, the 13th Amendment was passed that resulted in
the abolishment of slavery. Slaves just left the plantations they worked on
and made their own communities. Southern states had to come up with new
ways to get their farming labor done for practically free. New laws made it
so only inmates could perform free labor, so they enacted “Black Codes”
laws that criminalized freed blacks for the smallest thing like standing
around or being homeless. (History.com 2009) Next, the 14th Amendment
was formalized to include that previously enslaved individuals can become
U.S. citizens.
Women still did not have a right to vote. Free, black men were allowed
to vote with the signing of the 15th Amendment. “It guaranteed that a
citizen’s right to vote not be denied “on account of race, color, or previous
condition of servitude”.” (History.com 2009) This altered the makeup of
elected political figures. Whites were angered by the voting practices of the
freed blacks and the Ku Klux Klan was formed. Blacks started becoming
educated and some still relied on plantation work to support themselves.
Sharecropping was a way to provide cheap labor and keep the workers in
debt. But, the sharecropping industry went bust and the owners had to find
new ways to make money.
B. Industrialization in America brought quicker modes of transportation
like automobiles, steamships, airplanes, assembly lines, telegraph, and
sewing machines. (Chen 2022) Tremendous economic growth happened
throughout the country and people did not need or want to work in fields
anymore to make money. This resulted in scarcity of food. Factories were
being built in cities and migration increased causing pollution. The cities
were more expensive and dirtier to live in than the country and the entire
family was needed to pay bills. This caused child labor to be extremely high
and there were no laws on proper working conditions.
C. The Social Gospel movement had churches working with its members
to find ways to enforce social change. They wanted the community to know
that they were not alone, and the church would help them have better
working and living conditions. They believed that in helping the
disadvantaged, that it was honoring God. They helped establish
kindergartens and childcare facilities for working mothers, prison reform,
and voting equality. (Paul 2011)
Labor Unions started to form that helped reduce the hours worked in a
day, enforce safe conditions at work, forbid child labor, and reasonable
wages. The American Federation of Labor was created to alleviate these
