Needs Assessment
That past year has been quite eventful as Trinity Community Hospital took part in a
community health needs assessment. Focusing on the oncology, orthopedic, and cardiovascular
departments, the evaluation concentrated on key insights from epidemiological surveys, state
healthcare facility planning guidelines, physician interviews, input from other healthcare
, 2
professionals, and discussions with community focus groups (WGU, n.d.).
Our findings identified key risk factors, causes of ill health, and the actions required to
address these health risks impacting the community.
A1 – Risk Factors
Oncology Services
1) Demand – there is a documented rise in oncology needs.
• An anticipated 15 percent of individuals will be over sixty-five.
• Men are more likely than women to develop cancer, with an estimated fifty
percent of men and thirty-three percent of women expected to be diagnosed at
some point in their lifetime.
• There is a forecast to be 1,082 newly diagnosed cancer cases in the next five
years, from 3,200 today to 4,282 in five years, a thirty-four percent increase.
2) Existing Resources - Cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment facilities are already
overwhelmed.
• More physicians, nurses, and patient care coordinators are needed in orthopedic,
oncology, and cardiovascular care.
• Due to the overwhelmed physician practices, recruitment processes have begun.
• Little emphasis on cancer screening and prevention programs, despite the growing
need for early diagnosis.
• Community education on lifestyle changes has lacked consistency.
Orthopedic Services
1) Demand – Rapid expansion is projected over the next five years.
• A forty-six percent growth
