DENTAL RADIOGRAPHY
What are Dental Radiographs? - ANSWER:representation of a three dimensional object used in dentistry to
study and identify structures not visible to the naked eye.
What is radiography? - ANSWER:Applying the basic sciences of physics and chemistry as they relate to
photography.
Who is Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen? - ANSWER:German physicist, discovered x-rays in 1895. X-rays sometimes
called "Roentgen Rays".
Who is Otto Walkhoff? - ANSWER:Made the first dental radiograph in 1896 and experimented on himself.
Who is C. Edmund Kells? - ANSWER:First practitioner to take dental radiograph on a live patient. He repeatedly
experimented on his hand which led to cancer. He eventually had his arm amputated.
Who is William Coolidge? - ANSWER:Invented the first x-ray tube in 1913.
What are x-rays? - ANSWER:Electromagnetic rays that are not detected by any of the senses. Travel at the
speed of light or 186,000 miles per second
What is wavelength? - ANSWER:The measurement of rays from the crest of a wave to the crest of another
wave.
What is amplitude? - ANSWER:The vertical height from top to bottom of a wave.
, What is hard radiation? - ANSWER:This type of radiation is produced by x-rays and gamma rays, they have a
short wavelength and high penetrating power.
What is soft radiation? - ANSWER:This type of radiation has longer wavelengths with less energy and less
ability to penetrate matter. Some examples of sources of soft radiation are as follows:
What is ionizing radiation? - ANSWER:The radiation that is produced when x-rays produce ions in their passage
through matter.
What wavelength has greater penetration? - ANSWER:The shorter the wavelength and the higher the
frequency, the greater is the penetration.
What is distance? - ANSWER:The distance of the x-ray source to the object.
What is density? - ANSWER:The density of the object being penetrated.
What is the Control Panel? - ANSWER:On/Off switch, peak kilovolt knob, milliampere setting, timing dial and
exposure button.
What is the Extension Arm? - ANSWER:contains the wires necessary to connect the control panel to the
tubehead.
What is the tubehead? - ANSWER:contains the x-ray tube, transformers, tubehead seal and aluminum filters.
What is Primary Radiation? - ANSWER:Also known as direct beam or primary beam, this radiation emerges
from the x-ray tube. The penetration of this beam depends upon the KVP and MA settings.
What is remnant radiation? - ANSWER:All of the radiation that reaches this x-ray film passing through the
object being radiographed. These rays produce the latent image, not visible until x-ray is processed.
