This study guide covers the official ARDMS OB/GYN specialty exam domains, providing detailed content review,
key formulas/tables, and practice questions. The Abdomen exam assesses knowledge of abdominal organs and
superficial structures (like thyroid, breast, scrotum), including normal anatomy, physiology, pathology, and
sonographic techniques. The guide is organized by the exam content domains as outlined by ARDMS, with
expanded summaries and practice questions for each domain.

Exam Content Outline and Domain Weights: The ARDMS Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN)
board exam covers a broad range of topics in sonography. It is organized into five domains
according to the official content outline, with approximate exam weightings as follows :
• Domain 1: Gynecology – Pelvic Anatomy & Physiology (19%) – Normal female pelvic
anatomy, physiology, and common gynecologic pathology.
• Domain 2: Obstetrics – First Trimester (12%) – Early pregnancy development, normal
first-trimester findings, and associated complications/abnormalities.
• Domain 3: Obstetrics – Second/Third Trimester (37%) – Detailed fetal anatomy in mid-
to-late pregnancy, fetal abnormalities (by organ system), amniotic fluid and growth
disorders, and placental/cord/maternal complications.
• Domain 4: Protocols and Procedures (24%) – Sonographic practice guidelines,
measurement techniques, patient care, and assisting with procedures.
• Domain 5: Physics and Instrumentation (8%) – Doppler hemodynamics in OB/GYN, use
of ultrasound modalities (M-mode, 3D, etc.), and safety principles (ALARA).
Each section below provides an expanded review of the domain, including key concepts and
diagnostic criteria. Key formulas are embedded in plain text for easy reference. Each domain
section concludes with practice multiple-choice questions (with an answer key provided at the
end). Images are included to illustrate important sonographic findings (e.g. normal anatomy and
pathologies) where relevant. This guide is intended for intermediate to advanced learners
preparing for the OB/GYN registry exam, and it emphasizes high-yield topics per the exam
content outline.
