Classification of Matter - Mar 17, 2025
What is Matter: Any kind of particle or atom that takes up space and has a mass.
Examples:
1. Water
2. People
3. Copper
4. Oxygen
5. Helium
6. Any gasses
Is Matter ^
1. Light
2. Heat
3. electricity
Is Not Matter ^
Matter > pure substance, mixture > element + compound, homogeneous +
heterogeneous
Pure Substances: Contains only one type of matter
Element: Found as they are on the periodic table. E.x.. oxygen, copper
Compound: Formed when two or more elements combine chemically in a fixed ratio (does
not change). E.x.. water, sugar
Mixtures: Contains more than one type of matter
Homogeneous (Solutions): Looks the same. All samples are identified. E.x.. coffee with milk
Heterogeneous (Mechanical Mixture): Different components are visible. Samples are not
identical. E.x.. pond water, pizza
