Personal Mastery Scenario-Based Solver Projects
Scenario #1
Paula had been a nurse for 1 year in the Medical Surgical unit. There was a high turnover rate of
staff and Paula stayed very busy throughout her shifts. Her nurse manager approached her stating
that they were looking for preceptors for the incoming RN students. Paula immediately stated that
she did not feel comfortable doing that. When asked by her nurse manager why she didn’t want to
precept, Paula stated “I feel like I’m going to teach them wrong”. Her manager reassured Paula that
she is a great nurse and that everyone makes mistakes. Having the integrity to learn from those
mistakes is what’s important. Her manager gave Paula time to talk about why she felt like she
would teach them wrong. Paula stated, “I still feel so new, I’m not sure if I can teach them all that
they need to know.” Her manager encouraged her to precept regardless of the negative feelings
Paula had and felt it would be a great mentor opportunity for her. She had Paula write down three
positive things that could come from this precepting experience.

Opportunity Statement
Having a good first impression makes a huge difference in attitudes and beliefs. Some people are
not always positive and allowing them to express concerns will help to resolve conflict. It is
important to push individuals to step out of their comfort zones to learn new things and act as a
mentor. Precepting is a great opportunity for Paula to learn and mentor a student nurse. Everyone
has strengths and weaknesses, so it’s important to help them realize what those are.
Social and Emotional Power Skill
I would use interpersonal communication in this scenario by helping to build a strong professional
relationship with Paula. I would encourage Paula to accept the preceptor student by identifying her
strengths in this scenario. I would also show her that her negative feelings are valid by actively
listening to her concerns about precepting a student nurse.
Strength
I would use my strength of mentorship by encouraging Paula and pushing her to grow and try new
things. I would allow Paula to reflect on her abilities and strengths as a nurse by writing down
positive things to increase her confidence.
Communication Strategy
A communication strategy for this scenario would be to understand your audience and choose
words carefully. It is important to let Paula know that I understand her frustrations, but I continue
to see the positiveness of the situation. This will help give her the confidence to take the task as a
preceptor.
