Impacts of Drugs on the Brain
Strong synthetic opioid painkiller fentanyl can have several detrimental consequences on
the brain, especially if misused or abused. Like other opioids, fentanyl slows down brain activity
by depressing the central nervous system. This may result in disorientation, sleepiness, and
diminished cognitive abilities. Fentanyl has several negative effects on the brain by causing
mood disorders, alterations to brain structure, and respiratory depression.
Drug Description
Among drugs, fentanyl is the most bioavailable anesthetic and the primary cause of drug
overdose deaths in the United States. Since fentanyl and its derivatives have a low lethal dose,
using street drugs that include them can be fatal for the user as well as dangerous for first
responders. Methods for quickly identifying opioid fentanyl compounds, both established and
new, are essential. (Xu et al., 2020) Although fentanyl's categorization and regulations vary by
nation, because of its strong opioid effects, it is typically regarded as a highly restricted and
potentially deadly chemical. It should only be taken under the guidance of a medical practitioner
and for appropriate medical conditions, such as treating severe pain, especially when less
effective painkillers are not working.
