Lab 4- Physics 204

Introduction

In this lab the process of induction was visualized with the help of Faraday’s

experiments.

Certain aspects of Faraday’s experiments of induction were virtually simulated to better

understand this process along with magnets, compasses, and other objects.

Procedure

The experiment required the use of a virtual electromagnetic lab by PhET Colorado.

The experiment was done in multiple parts. The first part involved the use of a bar magnet and

observing its effect on a compass. The following part added a coil to the mix with a voltmeter or

light bulb attachment. Different interactions were made between the coil and bar magnet and

observations were recorded and interpreted. The next part introduced an electromagnet

component to the lab. The properties were examined with differing current sources of DC and

AC. After, a transformer was made with the electromagnet and coil and their interactions were

observed. The final part of the lab involved a generator component. A water powered generator

was manipulated and the effects on the magnetism, current, and voltage were observed and

interpreted.

Figure 1. Screenshot of simulation showing bar magnet tab (p1)

q1. The compass north always points to the bar magnet south because the opposite sides attract

when it comes to magnets.

q2. Yes, the geographic North Pole is actually a magnetic south pole because the north end of the

compass attracts to the south end.

q3. If the bar magnet were to be cut in half, the poles will not be separated but in fact would

occupy new poles(new N and S) but in a smaller form-factor because it retains its magnetic field
