Which mentoring skill applies to our ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people and is derived from self-awareness? - Correct Ans-Empathy The two types of feedback are ___________ and ____________. - Correct Ans-Positive, guidance Five characteristics of writing effective goals are specific, measurable, attainable, ________, and ________. - Correct Ans-Realistic, time bound In this mentoring role, the mentor must lead and teach by example. - Correct Ans-Role model 5 Steps to successful counseling - Correct Ans-Preparation Opening Main body Closing Follow up 3 approaches to counseling - Correct Ans-1. Directive 2. Non-directive 3. Combined Directive - Correct Ans-In the directive approach, the senior takes the lead in analyzing the Marine's performance, identifying the problems, and laying out a plan for improvement. The Marine Corps environment lends itself to the use of this approach, and in some cases, it is very productive as it takes less time. For Marines who are inexperienced, less mature, or unsure of themselves, it may be the only effective approach, depending on the diagnosis. If the problem is not identified correctly, the counselor could do more harm than good. For this reason, the directive approach should be used sparingly. Potential drawbacks to the directive approach: Does not require Marines to take responsibility for their actions Counselor may be focusing on a symptom rather than the cause Non Directive - Correct Ans-In the non-directive approach, the senior asks questions, listens, and uses a variety of techniques to draw the Marine into a discussion to reach personal decisions. This approach takes more time than the directive approach, and the counselor must demonstrate a high degree of counseling skill to achieve the results desired. The advantage is that it requires the Marine to think harder, seeing personal performance clearly and objectively. In this approach, the Marine takes responsibility for problems, plans for improvement, and makes decisions. When the non-directive approach is used skillfully, the advantages outweigh the cost in time and effort. Collaborative - Correct Ans-In practice, most counseling sessions involve a combination of the directive and non-directive approaches. Used together, they are more effective than when used alone. The directive approach can be used to curb rambling discussions and the non-directive approach to relax an otherwise tense session. In this approach, the counselor must be tuned in and alert to the conversation to change approaches as the situation changes. The counselor must understand the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and must be able to move easily from one to the other to keep the session moving in a productive manner. 3 Activities related to Junior's performance - Correct Ans-Setting targets Problem solving Plans for improvement 3 Activities related to Counselor's technique - Correct Ans-Questioning Active listening Providing feedback Purpose of counseling - Correct Ans-To develop Marines to their highest potential The five steps to effective counseling are preparation, opening, main body, ____________. - Correct Ans-Closing and follow up Which counseling approach does not require the Marine to take responsibility for their actions? - Correct Ans-Directive A lance corporal must have ___ months time in grade and ___ months time in service to be eligible for promotion to corporal. - Correct Ans-12, 12 Select the Marine that would be eligible for promotion from the list below. Marines in this zone are not stress-free because the Marine Corps way of life is seldom without stress. However, Marines in this zone can effectively master stress without impairment of social or occupational functioning. An important goal of leaders at all levels is to ensure Marines and units stay or return to the green zone once they have experienced distress or loss of function due to combat or operational stress. YELLOW "REACTING" ZONE - Correct Ans-Marines in the yellow "reacting" zone feel mild and temporary distress or loss of function due to stress. These reactions are always temporary and reversible. Yellow zone stress reactions are common for most everyone, especially in response to new challenges. Typically, once the challenge ends or the individual adapts to it, the stress reactions resolve. Yellow zone stress reactions are mild and self-limiting, but do not require professional treatment. ORANGE "INJURED" ZONE - Correct Ans-Marines in the orange "injured" zone encompass more severe and persistent forms of distress or loss of function that signal the presence of some kind of damage to the mind, brain, or spirit. Marines with stress injuries may not be able to perform their duties as expected or to participate in cohesive military and family units. Further evaluation and treatment is needed. Life threat Loss Inner conflict Wear and tear RED "ILL" ZONE - Correct Ans-The red "ill" zone is the zone of diagnosable mental disorders arising in individuals exposed to combat or other operational stressors. These must be diagnosed by competent health professionals. The most recognized stress illness is posttraumatic stress disorder, but stress illnesses take many different forms. Marines in this zone may deny that there is a problem and may justify their feelings and behaviors to themselves and family members. They may delay seeking medical treatment in hopes that in time their problems will go away. Unit leaders need to recognize the possibility of orange or red zone stress so that timely evaluation and treatment, if necessary, can take place. Core leader functions - Correct Ans-Strengthen
