● Rhetoric: the art of persuasion; use of language to convince, inform, or influence
an audience.
● Rhetorical appeals: the different ways to classify rhetoric by manner of appealing
to audience
○ Ethos- appeal to speaker’s credibility
○ Pathos- appeal to audience’s emotions
○ Logos- appeal to logic
Lecture:
● REVIEW SYLLABUS
● Everytime someone uses language to persuade someone, its rhetoric
● We use rhetoric everyday
● Aristotle is considered father of rhetoric
○ Developed rhetoric triangle
● Rhetoric studies how writers and speakers motivate their audience
● Ethos=credibility, you are more likely to listen to a person based on credibility, ex:
doctors giving medical advice
● Pathos= emotional appeal; adopting animal commercials use sad animals
● Logos= logistics; using statistics and data to discuss climate change
● Strong writers/speakers can blend all three to create a persuasive argument
● MLK I have a dream speech
○ Ethos: MLK is a respected civil rights leader, especially because he was
always speaking on civil rights, as well as the fact that he is a black man
speaking on his experience
○ Pathos: MLK speaks on children and injustice, creating emotional appeal.
Words like “oppression” creates deep emotion and get people motivated
○ Logos: He refers to Declaration of Independence and other historical
documents
● Malala UN address:
○ Ethos: she shares her firsthand experience as someone who was shot at
for trying attending school, this gives her credibility as a women’s rights
activist
○ Pathos: she tells stories of children and their inability to get an education
around the world
○ Logos: she references historical figures and statistics of uneducated kids
around the world
● Michelle Obama’s “Let Girls Learn” speech:
○ Ethos: she is credible due to her being a former first Lady and an
advocate for education
