Difficulty with intimacy, rage, and abusive behavior as a society and culture,
contribute to males trying to escape the feelings of depression. Attempting to escape
depression in this way may lead to these victims hurting the people they love the most; it is
counterproductive. Sexual assault brings feeling of shame guilt and often times confusion; this
makes it difficult for males to seek out professional counseling help. "Men may resist
counseling. For instance, men may decide that they themselves want to overcome the
obstacles that are impeding them. If so, then the counselor has an important opportunity to
collaboratively explore and challenge gender norms and roles that are no longer working for
men (Hays & Erford, 2018)." One approach a counselor can take is Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy (CBT). This approach encourages men to revisit their relationships with the men in
their family to gain a greater understanding of the individual men in their life. From a new
perspective these men that find themselves in counseling can now evaluate each relationship
and the gender roles they gained from those relationships and make necessary changes to
ascribe healthier gender roles (Hays & Erford, 2019).

1. Did the peer:
a. Describe the nature and prevalence of the selected trauma?
Michael presented a lot of information that addressed the nature and
prevalence of sexual assault trauma. He separated the categories by sex and
age. He did a really good job of this even discussed the numbers related to
stranger committing the assault vs being known to the victim.
b. Discuss trauma symptoms?
There were several symptoms noted
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Posttraumatic stress disorder
• Suicide attempts
• Substance abuse
• Feelings of shame, guilt, rage, isolation, and disconnection (McNicholas et al., 2021)
c. Provide a relevant client scenario and discuss appropriate
therapeutic approaches?
, There was a scenario provided. A 16 year old female assaulted by the
mother’s live in boyfriend. This is a all to common scenario. These predators
seek these vulnerable situations out.
d. Address the need for possible psychopharmacologic interventions
and collaboration?
Yes, the need for psychopharmacologic interventions and collaboration were
addressed. SSRI’s were recommended with examples of Sertraline and
Paroxetine. Noting that sexual assault can present trauma and anxiety.
2. What other psychotherapeutic approaches might you recommend?
Other psychotherapeutic approaches I might recommend EMDR. EMDR has been
proven to be effective with PTSD. It focuses on processing and moving past the trauma,
("Applying EMDR therapy to sexual health targets," 2021).
3. What applications do you see for the content of this presentation to your practice as
a PMHNP?
I can see being able to apply this whole presentation to my practice. I especially agree with
the psychotherapeutic approach. Focusing on emotions while being nonjudgmental.
