The maximum mark for this paper is 90.
You should note that the quality of your written language in both German and 10
English will be taken into account when marks are awarded.
In questions requiring a summary you should write no more than 70 words and TOTAL
you should write in full sentences.
This paper is divided into two sections:
Section A Listening and Writing 35 marks
Section B Reading and Writing 55 marks.
Advice
You may play back the listening material as many times as you wish.
You are, however, advised to allocate your time as follows:
Listening and Writing 40 minutes approximately
Reading and Writing 1 hour 5 minutes approximately.
,For AS German Paper 1: Listening, Reading, and Writing, focus on the
following key areas:
1. Listening:
Focus on Comprehension: Practice listening to a variety of spoken
German, including conversations, news reports, and interviews. Be
able to identify key information, themes, and details.
Key Vocabulary: Familiarize yourself with common phrases,
expressions, and vocabulary related to common themes like culture,
education, the environment, and social issues.
Listen for Specifics: Be prepared to listen for specific information,

such as dates, names, or opinions. Practice identifying key facts,
opinions, or ideas within conversations.
Exam Strategy: Read the questions before listening so you know what
to listen for. Focus on listening actively, and don’t worry if you miss a
word or two.
2. Reading:
Text Types: Practice reading different types of texts such as articles,
emails, advertisements, and literary excerpts. Pay attention to tone,
structure, and main ideas.
Skimming and Scanning: Develop skills for quickly scanning a text
for specific information and skimming for the general meaning or
argument.
Context Clues: Use context to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Look at the surrounding sentences for clues.
Key Themes: Focus on understanding main ideas, arguments, and the
writer’s perspective on various issues (e.g., education, culture, politics,
the environment).
Question Strategy: Pay attention to both the overall meaning and
specific details to answer questions accurately.
3. Writing:
Structured Responses: Be able to write clear, well-organized
responses. Practice writing essays and short responses that answer
the question directly, with appropriate structure and development of
ideas.
Grammar and Vocabulary: Use a wide range of vocabulary and
structures. Pay attention to correct grammar, including sentence
structure, verb conjugation, and noun-adjective agreement.
Topic Areas: Focus on familiar topics such as family, education, the
environment, social issues, and cultural topics. Be able to express
opinions, justify them, and discuss different perspectives.
Exam Strategy: Plan your writing before starting. Allocate time for
editing and proofreading for grammatical errors and clarity.
4. Key Skills:
Grammar: Review key grammatical topics such as word order, tenses
(present, perfect, future, etc.), and adjective endings. These are
essential for both the writing and reading sections.
Cultural Knowledge: Be familiar with aspects of German-speaking
culture, history, and current events. This could be relevant to reading
and writing topics.
