1. Spatial patterns of unemployment in South Africa (with reference to Western Cape)




Introduction



The National Development Plan (NDP) is South Africa’s plan to end poverty and reduce
inequality by the year 2030. An important part of this plan is understanding the different
spatial patterns of unemployment that still exist today because of the country’s past.
According to Unit 3 of the study guide, the NDP focuses on “the critical capabilities
needed to transform the economy and society” (University of South Africa, 2026, Unit 3,
p. 37). These patterns are explained in Unit 2 and Unit 4, and they can also be seen
clearly in the Western Cape province. One important issue is the spatial mismatch
between where people live and where jobs are located. The NDP suggests ways to
solve this problem, using practical ideas that can also be applied in local areas.There is
