Madigan, M.T. and Martinko, J. M. 2005. Brock Biology of Microorganisms-Bathobacteriology
Phytopathogenic Bacteria: 606325
Prerequisite: Plant Pathology
(606221)
Dr. Nehaya Al-Karablieh
, Welcome to Microbiology
What does microbiology refer to?
Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, which can be unicellular or
cell-cluster microscopic organisms
–This includes eukaryotes: fungi and protists AND prokaryotes (bacteria
and certain algae).
–Viruses, though not strictly classed as living organisms, are also studied.
–Microbiology is a broad term which includes many branches including
virology, mycology, parasitology and others.
Why is microbiology interesting?
Microbes can be harmful but are a necessary part of our lives

What is microbiology all about?
▪ Cells and how they work, especially the
bacteria, a large group of cells of enormous
basic and practical significance.
Single Microbial Cells
▪ Microbial diversity and evolution, about how
different kinds of microorganisms arose and
why.
Bloom of purple bacteria in a Lake
▪ What microorganisms do in the world at large,
in human society, in the human body, and in
bioluminescent
animals and plants. (light-emitting)
cells
