What is an intelligence test? -

✅A method for assessing an individual's mental aptitudes and comparing them with those of
others, using numerical scores. Test is used to measure the ability to think and reason rather than
acquire knowledge)

What is an aptitude test? -

✅Test designed to predict a person's future performance. Aptitude is the capacity to learn(ability
to learn or to develop proficiency in an area)

Ex: ACT, MCAT, SAT, GRE, LSAT



What is an achievement test? -

✅Test designed to asses what a person has learned(test of developed skills or knowledge)

Ex: highschool exit exam or a final, academic/progress exam



Reliability -

✅The extent to which a test yields consistent results, as assessed by the consistency of scores on
two halves on the test, or on retesting.

Galton's studies -

✅He studied eugenics(the science of improving the human race by controlled breeding. Even
though his test for simple intelligence failed, he gave us the phrase "nature and nurture"



Validity -

✅The extent to which a test measures or predicts what it is supposed to. A test is valid when it
measures what it claims to measure.

Ex: A test of intelligence should measure intelligence not something else like memory

Predictive Validity -

✅The success with which a test predicts the behavior it is designed to predict; it is assessed by
computing the correlation between test scores and the criterion behavior.



Deviation IQ -

✅(IQ tests) a way to measure an individual's generalized intelligence; statistically analyzes a
person's intelligence relative to their age.



Eugenic Movement -

✅This was the social movement claiming to improve the genetic features of human populations
through selective breeding and sterilization; based on the idea that it is possible to distinguish
between superior and inferior elements of society. This played a significant role in history and culture
of the USA.



Heredity -

✅Term that refers to the traits and features that are inherited from one's parents and ancestors.
At birth a person inherits 50% of each parent's genetic material(genes) that are passed along through
the chromosomes found in DNA.



Normal Curve -

✅A symmetrical, bell-shaped curve that describes the distribution of many types of data. Most
scores fall near the mean(~68% fall within the standard deviation of it) and fewer fall near the
extremes.



Identical twins -

✅Have similar grey&white matter volume, verbal and spatial intelligence. If raised together
intelligence scores are nearly the same and if raised apart less similar.



Virtual twins -

✅Same age but unrelated siblings adopted and raised together. Intelligence correlates to +0.28
which suggests a modest influence of their shared environment.
