Introduction
Cities worldwide are dynamic socio-spatial systems shaped by myriad forces, among the
most significant being population movements. In particular, urbanization processes often
manifest through a tension between centralization—where economic, political, and social
activities are concentrated in core areas—and decentralization—where these activities
disperse to outlying regions (Harrison, Todes & Watson, 2008). This essay examines how
these three forms of population movement—suburbanization, peripheral urbanization, and
counter-urbanization—create both centripetal and centrifugal forces in South African cities.
It focuses particularly on how these forces impact the social and economic opportunities
available in core and peripheral areas, the role of transportation networks, and the
provision of housing. In doing so, it reveals the complex interplay between centralization
and decentralization in a context defined by both global urban trends and legacies of
