TOPICS NURSING GUIDELINES
Bioterrorism
Anthrax incubation Serious infection disease caused by bacterium called bacillus anthracis.
Symptoms include a itchy bump that resembles insect bites. With a
painless sore w/ black center. Can impair breathing and cause GI
symptoms such as vomiting, Abd pain etc. Can a昀昀ect humans and
animals. Routes of exposure are cutaneous, inhalation, and GI (from
eating contaminated meat). It’s important in identifying exposure route,
running lab tests to con昀椀rm bacteria presence. Provide antibiotics,
ensure infection control, and evaluate patient’s response to treatment
while monitoring for any complications.
Disaster
Level 1, 2, and 3 phases Level 1- a massive disaster resulting in presidential disaster declaration,
of a disaster w/ federal, regional, and national resources. Search, and rescue,
providing emergent care and ensuring safety of individuals of the
a昀昀ected area.
Level 2- Requires state assistance and resource mobilization. Things such
as major 昀氀ooding, large scare power outages and wild昀椀res are part of this
level.
Level 3-Major disaster involves signi昀椀cant impact and requires e昀昀ort
from multiple agencies including the federal government to manage this
crisis e昀昀ectively. Examples are hurricanes, earthquakes, or tsunamis that
a昀昀ect entire regions.
For all disasters It’s important for nurses and healthcare sta昀昀 in Providing
immediate medical assistance, triaging pt’s based on severity of injuries
and working with healthcare teams is essential in patients care during
