Harder more complex events are followed with descriptions and there is noted the change in tension and international relations across the decade and events to see their influence.

1941
1940 June: Hitler attacks the Soviet Union,
which allies with britain and USA

1943
November: Tehran Conference -The USA and Britain would open up a second
front.
-Stalin would join the war against japan.
-Agreed the aim was to defeat germany and would
divide germany by giving poland a bit and giving
the ussr some of poland.
-started the idea of NATO.

would be run as a whole. Berlin would be divided in
the same way.

February: Kennan's long telegram

March: Churchills ‘iron curtain’ speech

September: Novikov telegram

USA and USSR tension rises

1947
January: Communist government
elected in poland

March: Truman doctrine announced
-Announce an economic aid package

June: Marshall Aid plan announced -Practical outcome of the Truman Doctrine
providing economic support to war torn countries.
Breakdown of any international relations.

September: First cominform meeting -A political organisation set up by stalin for all the
satellite states
1948
February: Communists seize power in -Stalin now had control over Czechoslovakia

June: Berlin blockade set up -Stalin shut off all land-routes across soviet
controlled germany. To prove a divided Germany
wouldn’t work.


Berlin Airlift -They flew supplies into Berlin as the soviets
couldn't shoot them down without it being seen as
an aggressive move.

January: Comecon established -Stalin's reaction to the Marshall plan (his version of
it).


April: NATO formed -12 Western countries allied together.

May: Soviets lifted the blockade

September: Official founding of the -23 May trizonia became the Federal republic of
federal republic of germany. west germany.
-14 August Germans are allowed to elect their own
parliament.
-15 september The first democratic leader elected.

October: German democratic Republic -Stalin's response to The federal republic of

November: Hungarian uprising -October: Protests against communist rule turn to
riots.
-24 october: Nagy becomes prime minister
-28 October: Soviet troops withdraw from Budapest
-3 November: Nagy announces hungary is leaving
the warsaw pact
-4 November: Soviet troops return.
