Vocational scenario
You are working as a volunteer for an international charity whose aims are to overcome
the threats to people’s health created by outbreaks of serious infectious diseases
caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites or protozoa. The charity runs several
programmes that work with communities around the world to reduce the extent and
impact of the diseases. Your role as a volunteer is to help research the various
antimicrobial, anthelmintic, vaccine, immunoglobulin and rehydration therapies being
used to treat a range of infectious diseases so that published information regarding the
charity’s work can be kept up to date. You will use your research to produce a report
that evaluates, compares and describes the different treatment methods and the
suitability, problems and contradictions to their uses.
Types of methods:
The type of method used to treat and prevent diseases is dependant on what actually
causes the infection for example bacteria or virus.These methods can include
- chemicals /drugs
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Prevention methods can include hand washing and safe sex. Furthermore, Vaccines
can also be used to prevent a person from developing an infectious disease.
Malaria
Malaria is a parasitic disease caused by the plasmodium parasite, affecting humans and
animals. Specifically, malaria is a Vector borne disease, meaning the disease is
transmitted through an infected insect, in this case, mosquitos.A person will become
infected with the Malaria disease if an infected mosquito were to bite them. This will
introduce the parasites from the mosquito's saliva and into the person's blood stream.
Once in the bloodstream, the parasites will travel to the liver where they begin to mature
and reproduce. By infecting the liver, it can cause organ congestion, inflammation and
sinusoidal blockage.
Due to the fact that malaria is transmitted through indirect contact (vectors), methods
such as hand washing will not prevent the infectious diseases.Instead, Mosquito nets,
antimalarial drugs and vaccines are More effective ways to prevent and treat malaria
infections.
