circumstances may be used. Force shall not be used where assigned duties can be
discharged without it. Excessive force may never be used; however, nothing in the
coast guard use of force policy shall be construed as to require personnel to meet force
with equal or lesser force.
Use of Force Continuum - Answer-6 levels: each level describes what force mechanical,
psychological or physical is available to the officer. The officer must choose which force
is reasonably neccesary
4 types of subjects - Answer-Passive compliant- a subject who follows the officers
requests or verbal commands
Passive resistor- a subject who does not follow the officers commands but offers no
physical resistance to the officers attempts to gain control.
Active resistor-a subject who does not follow the officers requests or verbal directions
and offers physical resistance that prevents or may prevent the officer from gaining
control, but does not try to harm the officer
Active aggressor- a subject who attempts to harm or attack the officer
Level 1 - Answer-Officer presence- the appearance, demeanor, and verbal and non
verbal communication that create an atmosphere of compliance
Level 2 - Answer-Verbal commands- task direction with consequences aimed at the
subject
Level 3 - Answer-Control techniques- techniques or actions with a low probability of
causing connective tissue damage, lacerations of the skin or broken bones.these
techniques include the proper use of restraint devices and pain compliance and strength
techniques.
, Level 4 - Answer-Aggressive response techniques- techniques or actions that are likely
to result in connective tissue damage, lacerations of the skin, broken bones, or cause
irritation to the skin, eyes or mucous membranes. These techniques include the proper
use of Kicks, stuns punches takedowns and chemical irritants
Level 5 - Answer-Intermediate weapons- techniques or actions with a high probability of
causing connective tissue damage, lacerations to the skin and broken bones. These
techniques include the proper use of the 12 gauge rubber fin stabilized munitions and
the expandable baton.
Level 6 - Answer-Deadly force- any force likely to cause death or serious Physical
injury, including the proper use of standard service weapons (the CG PDW, riot
shotgun, and M-16 rifle) and crew served weapons i.e. The M-60 or 50 caliber machine
guns.

What is OC - Answer-Oleoresin capsicum
OC requirements - Answer-Between 5-10% OC concentration. Shall not exceed .2%
capsacinoids. Water based carrier. Non toxic. Non flammable. Straight stream with
thumb activated switch and safety. 3 ounce container. Shall not exceed 500,000
Scoville heat units.
Explain ballistic splatter and ballistic needle effect - Answer-Splatter- gets sprayed past
12 feet. Needle- sprayed under 4ft and could damage cornea.
Ideal range of OC - Answer-4-12ft
Four S's - Answer-Shake, shout, spray, shuffle
Define serious injury - Answer-Actual physical injury to the body that results in
unconsciousness, protracted and obvious disfigurement, or protracted loss or
