Late October 1187 – Pope Gregory VIII issued his bull,
Audita Tremendi
November 1187 – Richard, Duke of Aquitaine and
Count of Poitou (later Richard I of England) takes the
cross
January 1188 – King Henry II of England and King
Philip II of France take the cross
March 1188 – Frederick Barbarossa, Emperor of
Germany, takes the cross
July 1188 – Henry dies, and Richard takes the throne
May 1189 – Frederick leaves with his forces and travel
overland to Jerusalem
10th June 1190 – Frederick drowns
July 1190 – Richard and Philip leave from France for
Jerusalem
8th June 1191 – Richard reaches the Holy Land (after
waiting until the following spring in Sicily and via
invading Cyprus)
12th July 1191 – Acre captured by Richard and Philip
3rd August 1191 – Philip abandoned the Third Crusade
7th September 1191 – Crusader victory at the battle of
Arsuf
October 1191-January 1192 – first attempt on
Jerusalem
June-July 1192 – second attempt on Jerusalem
2nd September 1191 – Treaty of Jaffa, no clear victor
declared
