In this video, Todd, the Senior Manager of Organisation Development at Disney’s
Orlando Resort shares his passion regarding empowering employees and provide
employees with tools and resources to ensure that they can be successful in their
roles. Todd indicates that he works as part of Disney’s HR Team and from what he
shares it is clear that he is very passionate about human resource development. He
mentions various aspects that traditionally form part of HRD such as leadership
coaching, which is his responsibility.
Scenario:
You have been approached by the newly appointed CEO of Disney Resorts, Becka
Roberts, to provide your expert view on the integration of OD and HRD. She is of the
opinion that Todd and the employees reporting to him, should be moved out of the HR
Department and that a separate department that focuses only on organisation
development (OD) should be established. During a briefing she explains to you that the
company experiences consistent change whether it be due to changes in customer
expectations, laws governing the industry or financial challenges. She is of the opinion
that the huge challenge regarding continuous change necessitates a separate OD
department. She is however somewhat concerned about how exactly the split between
HR and OD should be made. Should Todd retain his responsibility for leadership
coaching, or should this become the responsibility of the newly formed HRD
department? She is unsure of whether it makes business sense to separate OD and
HRD.
Ms Roberts asks you to write a report in which you recommend the most suitable
structure for the organisation based on your extensive experience as an HRD
practitioner. She asks you to base your recommendations on current literature as this
will assist her in motivating the correct course of action to her superiors. She asks you
to specifically address the following:
1. Explain Human Resource Development and Organisational Development.
Incorporate current literature in your discussion so that the two concepts are clearly
distinguishable.
2. Based on current literature, explain the interface between Human Resource
Development and Organisation Development.
3. Make a recommendation regarding the structuring of HRD and OD at the Disney
Orlando Resort. Motivate your opinion thoroughly by incorporating information from
the video as well as from the literature research.
