Consumer Behavior Exam #1|45
Questions and Answers Distinction
Graded
What are the four major uses or applications of an understanding of
consumer behavior? - -Marketing Strategy, Regulatory Policy, Social
Marketing, Informed Individuals

- What is involved in the company analysis phase of market analysis in
Figure 1-1? - -The firm must understand its ability to meet evolving
customer needs better than the competition. This involves evaluating all
aspects of the firm ranging from its financial condition to its general
management skills to its reputation. This will generally involve both internal
analyses as well outside assessments.

- What is involved in the conditions analysis phase of market analysis in
Figure 1-1? - -This is an analysis of the state of the relevant economies,
government regulations, the physical environment, and technological
developments.)

- What is meant by injurious consumption? - -Occurs when individuals or
groups make consumption decisions that have negative consequences for
their long-run well-being

- What is meant by consumer lifestyle? - -It is how the consumer lives.
Lifestyle is expressed in both work and leisure behavior patterns and (on an
individual basis) in activities, attitudes, interests, opinions, values, and
allocation of income. It also reflects people's self image or self concept; the
way they see themselves and believe they are seen by the others.

- What does the statement "Culture sets boundaries on behaviors" mean? -
-Normally, the boundaries of behavior are outlined by the culture, and even
some of these boundaries for certain kinds of behavior are vague. On the
other hand, very important behaviors, such as the ways in which one person
may force behavior in others, are very well defined. Consumptive behaviors
also run the gamut from vague (purchase and use of food products for
entertaining) to fairly specific (what clothes one should wear for specific
occasions such as weddings or funerals)

- What are demographics? Why are they important to international
marketers? - -It describes a population in terms of its size, structure, and
distribution; a result and cause of cultural values. It is important because the
international marketers need to know who they're audience is.

, - How do demographics affect a culture's values? - -The complex whole that
includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, customs, and any other
capabilities and habits acquired by humans as members or society. Cultural
values are widely held beliefs that affirm what is desirable. They impact our
daily activities. They are not shared by all members. However, they are
common to the main body of the culture even though there are significant
variations between subcultures.

- What is green marketing? - -Developing products whose production, use,
or disposal is less harmful to the environment than the traditional versions of
the product; developing products that have a positive impact on the
environment; tying the purchase of a product to an environmental
organization or event.

- What are the major decisions a firm faces with respect to the gay market? -
-There are a number of decisions a firms faces with respect to any diverse
group of consumers. The gay market is no different. Questions that need to
be addressed by a firm include: Does the product need to be modified in any
way to meet the needs of this market? Should we advertise in gay oriented
media using our standard ads or gay themes? To what extent should we be
involved in gay community activities? Should our major media ads include
ads with gay themes?

- Cause-related marketing is done to enhance a firm's sales or image. Some
critics consider such marketing to be unethical. What is your position? - -A
marketing that ties a company and its products to an issue or cause with the
goal of improving sales or corporate image while providing benefits to the
cause; benefits a cause and glamourizing the product

- Suppose AT&T showed a gay couple using its long-distance service or P&G
showed a gay couple using one of its laundry products in ads on network
television. Is a backlash by those who do not accept the gay community a
likely response? How are such consumers likely to respond and why? - -
Changes in values tend to occur slowly and unevenly across individuals and
groups. Thus, while the popular press often trumps "the new values of
Americans," sound studies of these new or changing values generally
indicate less change than is implied by another popular press.

- Describe how each of the following firm' product managers should
approach (i) the African American (ii) the Hispanic, (iii), the Asian American,
(iv) the Asian-Indian American, (v) the Native American markets. -
