CHST – Training test questions and
answers
Explain the advantage of using case studies in teaching workers about safety and health problems in the
workplace.
The use of actual case studies can be an effective way of teaching workers about potential safety
hazards in the workplace. Case studies are a good way of presenting safety and health issues in small
group or conferencing instruction. The advantages of case studies are clear:
*Case studies are real world experiences which have greater impact upon workers than would
presenting workers with dry textbook material
*Case studies are more likely than any other means to stimulate discussion.
*The use of case studies will allow the group to cooperate in solutions to the problems presented by
actual occurrences, injuries, or death. Pointing out weaknesses in a safety program or potential causes
of an accident is a necessary part of the case study.
Define the term: "incidence rate" of injuries and illnesses. Tell how it applies to the CHST position.
The "incidence rate" of illness and injury within a construction operation refers to a report showing the
number of accidents and illnesses which must be reported on OSHA Form 300. A reference number to
be used when computing the incident rate of injury and illness is 100 full-time workers. The incident
rate report shows the incident rate over a specified period of time, usually a period of one year.
The incident rate reports is useful in:
*Identifying recurring safety problems and weaknesses within a specific company or construction
workplace.
*Demonstrating mathematically the amount of progress a construction company has made in
preventing or limiting the number of injury and illness cases within a specific work environment.
Exlpain the difference between "norm-refenced" and "criterion-referenced" testing and evaluation.
Testing is often used to measure worker comprehension and functional ability to implement the safety
and health procedures in which he/she has been instructed. The terms "norm-referenced" and
"criterion referenced" testing are methods of comparison. These terms tell us whether the individual's
test performance is to be compared to the test performances of others in his group or whether it is
measured against a specific standard.
*Norm-based referencing is unreliable. Being the best student among a group of poor students is not a
high honor. It is better to measure the worker's performance against a set of standard, such as the high
safety standards required by OSHA.
*Criterion-based referencing means that the individual worker's performance is measured against a set
