Chapter 15. Physical Activity Interventions
Chapter Overview
After outlining common myths about physical activity interventions, the need for
physical activity interventions is introduced. The importance of maintaining a physically
active lifestyle is highlighted. After setting up the need to take action, the idea of
determinant and intervention research is explained. Intervention research differs from
determinant research in that interventions manipulate determinants believed to influence
physical activity behaviour. In intervention research, physical activity can either be an
outcome of the intervention or the intervention itself to attain another health outcome.
Theoretically-based interventions (based on the theory of planned behaviour, social
cognitive theory, and the transtheoretical model) that focus on physical activity as an
outcome are outlined, followed by a discussion of non-theoretical interventions. Different
approaches of delivery (e.g., technology) are outlined. The final section discusses
physical activity interventions for diverse populations, and highlights school-based
interventions, interventions for different age groups, and equity considerations in
interventions. The chapter concludes with identifying specific recommendations for
enhancing the probability of physical activity interventions being successful for changing
and increasing a person’s physical activity.

• Implementation intentions: Mental associations between a situational cue and a
specific behaviour.
• Intervention research: Research that evaluates how manipulating important
factors identified through determinant research affects exercise behaviour.
• Interventions: A set of actions designed to change physical activity patterns using
multiple means such as media, programming, policy, or any relevant and useful
strategy.
• Motivational interviewing: A focused method of communication used to help
facilitate behaviour change by helping people consider their own reasons for
wanting to engage in a new behaviour.
• Outcome variable: A response that occurs as a consequence of being involved in
physical activity.
• Outcome-based exercise research: Research that develops interventions and tests
whether or not they positively affect exercise behaviour.
• Persuasive messages: A strategy of behavioural change that provides specific
belief-targeted information.
• Physical activity counsellor: A primary health team member who has skills to
assist patients in making sustainable physical activity changes.
• Scheduling self-efficacy: Confidence in one’s ability to plan and organize
exercise in one’s life.
• Self-efficacy: Beliefs in one’s capabilities to organize and execute the course of
action required to produce specific outcomes.
• Self-regulation: Behaviour is self-directed and is initiated, monitored, and
evaluated by the individual in a way that is consistent with accomplishing
personal goals.
• Self-regulatory efficacy: A multifaceted form of self-efficacy that involves
personal control over the task, scheduling regular activity, and planning for and
overcoming barriers.
• Social norms: People’s evaluation of what they think significant others in their
life would like them to do and their motivation to comply with this wish.
• Stage-matching interventions: Specific intervention strategies that are sensitive
to the specific needs of the individual within different stages of change according
to the transtheoretical model.
• Task self-efficacy: Confidence in one’s ability to complete the exercise task.
• Treatment variable: A variable that is presented to an individual to see its effect
on an outcome variable.
