This document is applicable to the new linear A level. It contains detailed notes on the reign of Henry VII in timeline form followed by 16 detailed, A* standard model essays and essay plans covering both Henry VII and Henry VIII, including foreign and domestic policy. Extremely useful for targeted exam revision. I achieved an A* in my history A level and now study history at UCL.

Henry VII timeline 1

Year Events

1473

1474

1475

1476 - Treaty of Utrecht awards near-monopolistic rights over some goods to the Hanseatic League
in England.

1477

1478

1479

1480

1481

1482

1483 - Henry Tudor of Richmond tries to land near Poole harbour but is prevented by a storm and
driven off by the men of Dorset. His fellow conspirator, the Duke of Buckingham is executed
by Richard III.

1484

1485 - In August, Henry Tudor (aged 28) lands at Milford Haven in South Wales with 1800 French
mercenaries and advances into the midlands.
- Henry Tudor defeats the Yorkist King, Richard III, at the battle of Bosworth Field on
August 22. The battle is won with the help of Lord Thomas Stanley and Sir William Stanley
who intervened on Richmond’s side when the King’s men were separated from his troops (in
an apparent bid to kill Henry and end the battle quickly). The Earl of Northumberland, leading
a large portion of Richard’s army also failed to commit his troops, who were perhaps affected
by a lack of loyalty to their monarch. The Duke of Norfolk led the third group of the royal army
and was slain during the battle. Henry’s men meanwhile were unified under the command of
John de Verre, the Earl of Oxford. It is estimated that Henry’s army numbered 5000 to
Richard’s 10,000 whilst the Stanley family commanded around 6000 troops.
- Edward Plantagenet, Earl of Warwick, son of Thomas Duke of Clarence and the last heir in
the legitimate male line of Plantagenet is imprisoned.
- Henry’s coronation takes place on the 30th of October.
-
- Navigation Act forbids transportation of Gascony wine to England in anything other than
English ships.
-
1486 - The Lovell Conspiracy: In April Henry learns of a conspiracy to restore the Yorkist monarchy
led by Lord Francis Lovell and the Stafford brothers (Thomas and Humphrey). When the plot
failed, Lovell fled to Burgundy, Humphrey Stafford was captured and executed though his
younger brother Thomas gained a royal pardon.
- Henry marries Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV, in January, thereby uniting the
houses of York and Lancaster.
- Prince Arthur is born in September and crowned Prince of Wales.
- Treaty removing the trade restrictions that had been imposed by France before Henry’s reign.
- Henry confirms the trading rights of the Hanseatic League.
- Commercial agreement with Brittany.
- Scotland recapture Dunbar, to which Henry turns a blind eye in the interests of diplomacy.
- Three Year Truce with Scotland: Dunbar was to be kept by Scotland and the territorial
dispute over the border town of Berwick to be settled by commissioners. Marriage alliances to
be explored.
