Unit 2- Introduction to Hearing
Conservation
The mission of the AF HCP - Answer-Is to prevent noise induced hearing loss.
Who the AF HCP protects - Answer-All noise-exposed personnel and air crew members, including:
- AD, Guard, Reserve, and Civil Service
- Appropriated (DFAC) and Non-appropriated (Bowling Alley)
- Seasonal and Temporary workers
- Foreign Nationals
- Contract employees if specified in contract
DoDI 6055.12 - Answer-Hearing Conservation Program, governs the hearing conservation for the whole
DoD.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.95 - Answer-Is the federal regulation that governs occupational noise. It sets the
standard at the federal level for noise exposure.
, The Americans with Disabilities Act - Answer-Is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against
individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public
and private places that are open to the general public.
AFI 48-127 - Answer-Occupational Noise and Hearing Conservation Program. This is the primary Air
Force regulation used for the HCP.
What are the two main sources of hazardous noise? - Answer-Occupational and Non-Occupational noise
Occupational Noise - Answer-Machines, factory equipment, weapon explosions, weapon systems and
also hazardous workplace processes when repairs are conducted on equipment, continuous
manufacturing, and carpentry, are examples of what?
Non-Occupational Noise - Answer-Also known as recreational noise can come from sources such as
motorcycles, music, hunting, wood-working, lawn equipment, etc.
Acoustic Trauma - Answer-Example of an effect of noise that is not progressive.
Sociocusis - Answer-Is hearing loss that develops over time after repeated exposures to loud non-
occupational noise. The effects on hearing are virtually indistinguishable from occupational noise
induced hearing loss.
gradually - Answer-The effects of noise often occur ____________ and not always obvious to the
individual effected.
Blast injuries or acoustic trauma are caused when: - Answer-Exposed to a very loud event or explosion.
Examples of ototoxic or poisonous industrial agents: - Answer-Heavy metals, organic solvents and
asphyxiants like carbon monoxide. Can become problematic when combined with hazardous noise
because they can accelerate hearing loss.
