SUMMARY NOTES VIDEO 1/ UNIT 2: Kay Swainston

The six main components of Information Technology is:

1) Hardware: Anything I can physically touch, ex: Motherboard, CPU chip (brain), RAM
memory. The RAM only supports the CPU, the more RAM you have the faster the CPU
works.
2) Software: is a set of computer instructions that tell the computer how to work. There are three
types of software. 1) Application software: is software that the end user chooses to use such a
music app, calculator, social media app, CRM 2) System software: operating system examples
are Windows, Microsoft Window, Apple (MacOS). ft) Utility: This is software that performs a
particular function in the background such as virus protection software, or printer drivers.
ft) Networks: Computer networks include devices such as routers, switches, and communication
links that allow computers to communicate with each other no matter the distance between
them. Networks allow sharing of information and collaboration of work. Routers basically route
all the data through radio waves and switches are basically bridges that connect you to
different networks.
4) Data: Is the second most valuable assets after finances. Data can be imported and stored in
data warehouses and databases to where you could retrieve the data to make decisions. Be
able to pull queries, have all the data structured, be able to do data mining.
5) People: People are called end users when they use hardware, software, networks,
and databases in their daily work.
tt) Processes: Business uses it in its daily operations. End users are working with it daily. Selection
of the software is key or very important to meeting the requirements of the end user.

Topologys: Bus Topology is lined up like a bus, with one ethernet wire running down the center.
Ring Topology is a circle, for them to talk to each other the computers have to go around and
talk to each other till it reaches the computer it wants to talk to. This way is a bit outdated
because if a computer fails then the info won’t get passed on.
Star Topology is connected to one server that is connected to the internet. This is the easiest
topology to fix a computer if needed.

Terms:
Malware: all malicious software.
Dumpster diving: The process of searching someone’s trash for information they can use.
Phishing: is sending emails that look like they are real and from reputable companies to try to
get private information like passwords, credit card numbers etc.
Pharming: Trying to direct internet users to bogus websites to get private information such as
passwords, account info etc.
Spyware: aims to gather information on someone without their knowledge to use against them
and send to another entity.
Shoulder surfing: Is the act of obtaining personal or private information through a direct
observation. This could happen at a gas station, or a library where someone happens to visually
see your personal information.

Best practice: Is a technic that is most effective at arriving at a desired outcome. Better outcome
then any other process.

Moore’s Law states that computing power doubles every 18 months.

Always think about the future when it comes to Information technology.

Management Roles in IT:

Chief information officer (CIO): Board-level head of an information technology department.
Chief technology officer (CTO): more runs the IT engineering and is the top technology
architect. Chief Security officer (CSO): Maintain the IT security and is the leader for all security.
Makes sure all the databases are secure.
IT Managers: Manages the IT staff; there are different IT managers for different areas.
Network Administrator: Directly responsible for the smooth operations of a company regarding
connection, access, software, and this is the first person you typically deal with when getting
started at a company.
Information Security Analysis (ISA): Sometimes called cybersecurity analyst. They work for the
chief security officer. They make sure you don’t get hacked into by doing audits. They watch all
the sensitive information and protect it. They should be the ones that sign off on projects etc.
verifying its safe.
Database Administrator (DBA): They keep tabs and develop databases (data warehouses). They
set up the tables and make sure all the information is smooth and make sure everything goes
to the correct place and that the data is normalized and NOT REDUNDANT.
Web Developers: Prepare and plan a web based application. They can change and recode your
website.
Computer Programmers (coders): They put in a set of instructions for the computer to fallow.
Computer support specialist: Help desk, They know a little about everything. They can
troubleshoot and hopefully find the issue. They would probably be the first people you would go
to with an issue. Could assist with your hardware, printers etc.
Computer systems administrator: They have a slightly bigger role then the computer support
specialist people. Would be the second level of defense in compared to the computer support
specialist.
Computer systems analyst: Must be good at communication skills. Good with the business side
and the IT side.
IT architect: Good with applications and is sometimes called the application architect. Sets up
