• Modifier 50 is used when the same procedure is done on
both sides of the body (bilateral). For example, if surgery is performed
on both hands, you add Modifier 50 to show it was done on both sides.
• Modifier 51 is used when more than one procedure is done
on the same patient during the same session. It shows that the
provider performed multiple surgeries or procedures in one go.
So, Modifier 50 is for procedures done on both sides of the body, while
Modifier 51 is for when multiple procedures are done in one session
