PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use
in chronic stable exertional angina, nitroglycerin dilates veins and treatment of acute angina attack
decrease venous return(preload) which decreases cardiac oxygen.
-In Prinzmetals or vasospastic angina, nitroglycerin prevents or -prophylaxis of chronic stable angina or
reduces coronary atery spasm, thus increasing oxygen supply.
Oxygen is not decreased.

Complications Medication Administration
headache -provide continuous cardiac and

Contraindications/Precautions
-pregnancy risk category B for tablets and category C for capsules,IV, spray,ointment,patch.
-contraindicated for clients who have hypersensitivity to nitrates.
-contraindicated in clients who have severe anemia, closed angle glaucoma and traumatic head injury,
med can increase intracranial pressure.
-use cautiously in clients taking antihypertensive meds and have hyperthyroidism or kidney or liver
dysfunction.
Nursing Interventions
-inhibitors of phoshodiesterase type 5 for ED administered w/nitroglycerin can intensify the nitroglycerin
induces vasodilators and result in life threatening hypotension provide continuous cardiac and
bloop pressure monitoring.

Interactions
-use of alcohol can contribute to the hypotensive effect
-antihypertensive meds (beta blockers, calcium channel

tablets
or sublingual is ineffective if swallowed
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness -stop taking long acting nitroglycerin
abruptly.
-prevention and termination of acute anginal attacks. -place patch on hairless area of skin and
- long-term management of stable angina rotate sites.
-control of perioperative blood pressure. -remove patch at night to reduce risk of
