Who was Galen? - ANSWER-Galen was a Greek who was a doctor during the
Roman Empire.
How did he develop his ideas? - ANSWER-Galen was influenced by Hippocrates's
idea of the Four Humours (the theory that the body was made up of four liquids,
blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile). Hedeveloped this by introducing the
idea of using opposites to treat illnesses
Treatment of Opposite - ANSWER-if a patient had a fever this was believed to be
the result of too much yellow bile in the body. As a way of treating this, Galen
would suggest that the patient drink lots of cool liquid and eat cold foods.
How helpful was being a gladiator to him - ANSWER-He trained as a doctor to
gladiators and was able to increase his knowledge of human anatomy while
treating wounds. Galen dissected pigs, goats and apes and applied what he had
learnt to the human body.
What did Galen prove from his expirement - ANSWER-Galen dissected animals
and proved in his experiment with a pig that the brain controlled the body, not the
heart. However, many of his ideas on anatomy were incorrect as human anatomy
is not the same as pigs, dogs and apes.
How important was Galen? - ANSWER-He followed Hippocrates idea of
observation and believed in the theory of the four humours.Galen developed the
theory of the four humours by creating a treatment by opposites. This led to
continuity in medical knowledge and practice
