Understand the systems engineering design process emphasizes function that begets form. -
ANS-SE310 Tenet #3?

1. complexity and behavior

2. component dependencies

3. hierarchical organization

4. boundaries - ANS-What are the properties of a system?

Components
Attributes
Relationship - ANS-What are the elements of system?

Structural-static parts
Operating-part perform processing
Flow-the material/energy/information being altered - ANS-What are the types of components in
system that change material/energy/information?

1. Natural vs. Human made (engineered) Systems-natural systems are those that came into
being by natural processes.

2. Physical vs. Conceptual Systems

-physical manifest themselves in physical form

-conceptual are just ideas and do not occupy space like physical systems do

3. Static vs. Dynamic Systems
-static systems do not change because it has structural components but no operating or flow
complements (bridge)

-dynamic system exhibits behavior because has operating and/or flow components (school
w/teachers, books, students)

4. Closed vs. Open Systems

-closed systems do not interact with environment.; internal rigidity that maintains the system in
spite of influences from the environment.

, -open systems allow information, energy, and matter to cross its boundaries; interact with the
environment - ANS-What are the 4 types of dichotomy class of system?

Human kind closely related to technology; also due to expansionism- a doctrine that considers
all objects and events, and all experiences of them, as parts of larger wholes - ANS-What is the
desired relationship between technology and society and the challenges presented by
technological growth and change?

It is looking at things from the inside-out while analytic thinking is looking at things from the
outside-in - ANS-What is synthetic thinking?

A life cycle orientation that addresses all phases to include system design and development,
production, distribution, operation, maintenance and support, retirement, phase-out, and
disposal - ANS-What defines systems engineering

Team approach throughout the system design and development process to ensure that all
design objectives are addressed in an effective and efficient manner - ANS-What does
interdisciplinary mean?

interdisciplinary- more than one branch of knowledge all being considered to provide the best
outcome. iterative- going through the system multiple times to make sure it works and fix
anything that does not. integration- when things come together they work. interfaces-what
allows your components to come together. - ANS-What are the 4 I's

a) have functions b) brought into being and operate over a life cycle, beginning with
identification of needs and ending with phase-out c) have momentum that steadily increases
throughout design, production, and deployment, and then decreases throughout phase-out,
retirement, and disposal. d) composed harmonized combination of resources, such as facilities,
equipment, materials, etc. e) composed of subsystems and related components that interact
each other for desire response. f) hierarchy and are influenced by external factors from sibling
systems from which they are composed g) embedded into the natural world and interact in
desirable/undesirable ways - ANS-What are the seven characteristics of engineered systems?

System: more than just the consumable or repairable product Product: customer's needs must
be functionally decomposed and allocated to the subsystem - ANS-What is the difference
between products and systems?

a) Design and development (Product Life Cycle) b) Production or construction (Production and
Construction Life Cycle) c) Utilization and support (Maintenance and Support Life Cycle) d)
Phase-out and disposal (Retirement, Phaseout, Reuse, Disposal, and Life Cycle) -
ANS-Draw/What is the phases of the system life cycles?
