The four decisions/outcomes are: • go ahead; • basic EIA required; • full EIA required; and • no-go. Evaluate the following hypothetical scenarios and answer the following questions for each scenario: a) What is the most probable decision/outcome for the development? b) Explain what the decision entails. c) Justify the decision by discussing two (2) listing notice activities applicable to the development. d) Provide one positive and one negative environmental impact of such a development. Proposed developments: 6.1. A new Uranium mine is being planned near a wetland, which is classified as a Ramsar site. The proposed location is also known for the regular occurrence of seismic activity and extreme droughts. The planned location for the nuclear waste site is currently home to three tribal communities/villages with a rich heritage. (6) 6.2. A new harbour on the west coast of South Africa is being planned to increase the import and export of goods. This new harbour will decrease the pressure currently placed on the existing harbours. The harbour will not only be of service to South Africa but also to its neighbouring countries. (6) 6.3. A new all-purpose stadium is planned for the City of Cape Town. The stadium will be able to seat 20 000 spectators. The stadium must function as a football, rugby, cricket and athletic field, and must also consist of an athletics track. (6) GGH3705/001/2/2024 9 6.4. A local racecourse is being upgraded to host a leg of the F1 Grand Prix in 2023. The racecourse is located just outside an urban area in South Africa. The course is currently being used as an advanced driving training location. (6) 6.5. A new university is being built in the Northern Cape province. The project includes offices, lecture halls, four student residences, an auditorium and sport facilities. The proposed site covers 21 hectares of land.
