Open the file ‘employee p3 - small.sav’. Data is about salaries in a company.
• ID: identification number
• JOBCAT: job category: 1 = clerical; 2 = custodial; 3 = manager
• SALARY: current salary
• SALBEGIN: start salary
• MINORITY: belonging to a minority group: 0 = no; 1 = yes.
Comparing the means of two groups
A researcher wants to test whether the start salaries of non-minority groups are higher than that of
minority groups.
1. Compute the frequency distribution for the Minority classification variable. How many people in
the sample belong to a non-minority group and how many to a minority group?
Use Analyse > Descriptive Statistics -> Frequencies with Minority classification as variable.
Non-minority group: 104
Minority group: 30
2. Compute a histogram to view the distribution of start salary. Is the Beginning salary normally
distributed for people belonging to non-minority groups and minority groups?
- Go to Graphs > Legacy dialogs > Histogram
- select Beginning salary as variable
- Insert Minority Classification into Panel by Rows
Non-minority groups: Normally distributed / Not normally distributed
Minority groups: Normally distributed / Not normally distributed
3. The researcher wants to check this a little further and decides to also view the box plots. Compute
the boxplot of Beginning salary for the two groups on minority. Does the Boxplot confirm the
conclusion based on the Histogram?
- Go to Graphs > Legacy dialogs > Boxplot
- Choose Simple
- Select Beginning salary
