We belong to the earth. We are made of it, and from it we obtain sustenance. There can be no human race without the earth. In the end, to it we shall all return. Until then, we claim the earth as our own. By and large, the land law grew from this entrenched habit we learn so quickly as toddlers, ‘it is mine.’ This comprehension of land differs slightly from the African understanding of land, where it is communally owned. Just as precious as land is, so are the numerous benefits that attend its ownership: it is a home, a source of income, a pathway for the neighbour, a security for a loan, a lodge for the guest as well as an investment. Therein lays the grandeur of land ownership. Reasons for land law Land law deals with the rules which regulate the manner in which land is owned, used and disposed of. This realm of the law is esteemed because of both current and outmoded concepts that are closely linked with the value of land. This is reflected in the fact that just in the recent past nothing is more valuable to individuals as land is until it was rivalled by commerce.
