, Abstract
I conducted anapplied research project and created a professional development program. The
topic of the research project was Social Emotional Learning (SEL). The problem at my middle
school was students were not receiving adequate SELinstruction. Teachers were not fully
implementing the required Character Strong SELcurriculum. The lack of SELinstruction had a
negativeimpactonstudentacademicachievementandclassroombehaviors.Thiswashappening
because it was the first year the school adopted this curriculum and teachers needed detailed
training and support. My research question was how can a professional development be created
to support educators in the implementation of the Character Strong curriculum with clarity,
competence, and consistency? I used a needs assessment survey and an assessment on SELto
determine participants’level of understanding and feelings towards SELinstruction.There were
nine participants/stakeholdersthat wereall middle schoolteachersofvarying subjectsand grade
levels. The research accurately confirmed the problem that teachers were not consistently
teaching the curriculum and lacked the skills to transition their understanding of SELinto
practice.
