BICSI Chapter 2 SCS
Hierarchical Star Topology - ANS-Connected to each other via a central hub.
Recommended topology for structured cabling backbone distribution systems in buildings and in
campus environments.
Is an extension of the Star Topology.
Star Topology - ANS-Switch/Hub is placed in the physical as well as logical center of the
network.
Each device has its own direct, dedicated connection to the switch.
Offers great flexibility in that it can configure to accommodate each of the logical topologies.
Star Topology Advantages (4) - ANS-1. Cabling is easier to install and maintain.
2. If one device is disable or isolated from the switch, it is the only device affected.
3. Faults are easier to locate and isolate.
4. It provides central location for network management.
Star Topology disadvantages (2) - ANS-1. May be vulnerable to breakdown as the network is
essentially controlled by one device at a central location.
2. Is more expensive
A Switch - ANS-Is a network access device that provides a centralized point for LAN
communications, media connections, and management activities where each switch port
represents a separate collision domain.
Ring Topology - ANS-It has never been popular in its basic form
It uses one cable to connect between devices. Each device is connected to the next one. Places
all of the network devices in a circle. The last device is connected to the first, closing the circle.
Advantage of Ring Topology - ANS-There is no reliance on a central device; all messages pass
through all devices.
