Exercise 2 Practice: Finding Specific Details in Freewriting
Below are two samples of freewriting. Each is a written response to a differ-
ent topic. Read each sample, and then underline any words and phrases that
could become the focus of a paragraph.
Answers will vary. Possible Freewriting Reaction to the Topic of Summer
answers are shown.
Summer used to be summer vacation. Now I have to work in the summer, just like I work
the rest of the year. At least the days are longer in summer. Can get outdoors after
work. Can go for a walk. Jog. Do yard work or sit on the porch. Summer holidays, too.
July 4th. Labor Day. Warm weather means summer food and barbecues.
Freewriting Reaction to the Topic of Online Gaming
I love online gaming. It’s a fun way to connect with my friends as well as make new friends.
Multiplayer games are the most fun. I tell my friends when to log on. We always meet up in a
room to start. Some people say online gaming is addictive. I don’t believe it. I think it’s a way
to play without leaving the house. Online games are always available—and they are cheap!

any words or phrases from your writing that could lead to a specific topic
for a paragraph.
Your listener(s) should read the jotted-down words or phrases to you.
