It is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage Cutaneous or superficial pain Pain that arises in the skin or the subcutaneous tissue; may cause significant short-term pain ex. burns or abrasion Deep somatic pain Pain that originates in the ligaments, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, and bones; tends to last longer ex. fractures, sprains, arthritis, and bone cancer Visceral pain Pain caused by the stimulation of deep internal pain receptors, most often in the abdominal cavity, cranium, or thorax; may vary from local, achy discomfort to more widespread, intermittent, and crampy pain ex. menstrual cramps, labor pain, GI infections, bowel disorders, and organ cancers Radiating pain Pain that starts at the origin but extends to other localizations. ex. pain of a severe sore throat may extend to the ears and head Referred pain Pain that occurs in an area that is distant from the original site ex. pain from a heart attack may be experienced down the left arm, through the back, or into the jaw Phantom pain Pain that is perceived to originate from an area that has been surgically removed ex. patients with amputated limbs may still perceive that the limb exists and experience burning, itching, and deep pain in that area Psychogenic pain refers to pain that is believed to arise from mind; patient perceives the pain despite the fact that no physical cause can be identified Acute pain pain that has a short duration with rapid onset; varies in intensity and may last up to 6 months
